Historical project feature · Work began June 2022 · Gray, Georgia
Jones County Courthouse is a recognizable part of Gray’s civic landscape. Its brick exterior and clock tower are also a reminder that maintaining a historic building involves many connected parts, from the roof above it to the windows and masonry around it.
Warren Associates began renovation work at the courthouse in June 2022. Our project account, published April 21, 2023, recorded a scope combining exterior repairs with elevator modernization. This feature looks at that documented scope and the planning questions it illustrates.

Renewing the building’s exterior
The April 2023 account identified several intended improvements:
- Repairs to the sloped roof and replacement of shingles.
- Cleaning and repair of brick and mortar.
- Exterior cleaning and painting.
- Gutter and leaf-guard installation.
- Replacement and re-caulking of damaged glass and wood window sashes.
- Modernization of the elevator.
These items are useful to consider together. For an owner planning similar work, a roof repair, a window repair and an exterior finish should be discussed as related parts of the building. Defining the boundaries of each task helps the owner, architect and contractor understand what is included and where further investigation may be needed.
Questions worth resolving early
A historic civic renovation benefits from clear decisions about the building’s character, intended use and maintenance needs. Before work is priced or scheduled, owners can ask:
- Which existing features must be retained, repaired or replaced?
- What condition information is available, and what still needs investigation?
- How will different areas of work connect?
- What access and scheduling requirements must the construction plan accommodate?
Answering these questions gives a renovation a clearer starting point. It also helps distinguish a visible finish improvement from work that addresses the condition of the building behind that finish.
Preserving a place with a public purpose
The Jones County project connects Warren’s historic construction experience with the practical needs of a civic property. Buildings of this kind deserve attention both as community landmarks and as places intended to remain useful.
