Project retrospective · Expansion celebrated August 8, 2024 · Macon, Georgia
A food bank’s mission depends on people having room to work. Volunteers need space to pack food, staff need a place to coordinate services, and both need a facility that supports the tasks happening throughout the day.
The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank celebrated completion of its expanded and renovated hub on Ocmulgee East Boulevard on August 8, 2024. The project is part of Warren Associates’ construction portfolio and provides a clear example of how improvements to a building can support a community organization’s work.

Space for volunteers and staff
Macon-Bibb County’s completion report highlighted new staff office space and a volunteer packing room three times the size of its predecessor. During the ribbon-cutting visit, attendees could see volunteers already packing food boxes in the expanded room.
That is a useful way to understand a construction project: through the activity it is meant to accommodate. Floor area matters most when it is considered alongside the people, supplies and everyday movement that the space must support.
For an organization planning an expansion, an early walkthrough with staff can help define those needs. Where do people enter? Where do materials wait? Which tasks happen at the same time? What works well in the existing building, and what is difficult? These questions help turn a broad request for more room into a clearer construction scope.
Investment in a community resource
The county reported that the expansion was supported by state and local funding, including a Community Development Block Grant and local American Rescue Plan funds. Its August 2024 account connected the improvements to the Food Bank’s work across a 24-county service area.
For a nonprofit facility, construction planning also means understanding how a building fits the organization’s purpose. Staff, volunteers, leadership and the project team may each notice different needs. Bringing those perspectives together can help establish priorities before the design and budget advance.
Looking beyond the ribbon cutting
The finished exterior is one part of the story. The larger purpose is the work taking place inside: people organizing, preparing and supporting food assistance for their neighbors.
